letter it is true that I have deprecated, to the extent that I have mentioned in my letter to the Secretary of State, the action of the Government in connection with this rendition Case, but I would scarcely go so far as to say that I have directly challenged it. I certainly think, considering the grave issues involved, the importance the issue possesses to men priori entitled to our protection, together with the fact that the Governor is the final judge of the matters submitted to him, it is important that the Executive hold aloof while the cases are being heard, and refrain from any intervention until they are before them, but I would not on that account wish to appear to be assuming a position of antagonism. It is I who have been attacked and I am only putting forward my view of the case in extenuation of my own conduct and in defence of my own office.
